Back in 2004, I began tackling the thought of doing a ‘progumentary’ on Gentle Giant. When I presented the idea to some close friends and colleagues, they loved the idea for Gentle Giant wasn’t a band to be covered in hourly spotlights in the radio media. My staff thought I was insane. But I thought, “why not?”. After finding some old reels of interviews with Gary, I began setting up some contacts with some key people. I was able to get Kerry on board who was a gem and very generous, Pug who made the stories flow even nicer with his quick wit (and love for American baseball), and the ultimate surprise of having the chance to speak with Derek fall into my lap from our friend Rick Krim of VH1. Within a span of a few weeks, a documentary seemed inevitable. After receiving the first two reissues, the puzzle began to be put together. But then some unexpected delays occurred, and then the realization that 60% of our Giant library was on decent vinyl yet badly needed to be upgraded. Not that there was anything wrong with that concept, it just need to sound cleaner(no pops), and sound tight when doing digital editing on a cpu/mac. Then there were other setbacks with the production, then other setbacks in general. So there the discs and reels sat…till June of 2008. After some fine tunings, I felt it was time to give it a shot and give to the fans what they were promised 3 years ago…insight into one of the greatest and most cherished progressive rock bands of all time.
This was a tedious undertaking of many hours of chopping, cleaning, editing, and making edible for radio airplay. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did creating it. Sit back, and enjoy.
