Gary Boyle Of Isotope Joins Us 11/15/08

Guitarist Gary Boyle is best known for his time in founding one of the great British jazz-rock bands, Isotope. This band has been a favorite on our program over the years but not just our listeners, but the hosts and producers as well! Isotope arose in 1972 and garnered as much attention as the greats of the time, Soft Machine and Nucleus. After their signing to an independent record label, Isotope’s future was bright. The band would release the album Illusion which instantly became a classic to jazz rock fans throughout Europe. The line up was stellar. Gary Boyle on Guitar, legendary ex Soft Machine bassist and guest of ours over the years, Hugh Hopper, keyboardist Laurence Scott, and drummer Nigel Morris. Isotope’s fortunes only improved with hundreds of shows under their belt with this timeless line up. Steve Feigenbaum of Cuneiform Records pulls another rabbit out of his Radio Bremen archives ‘hat’ in the outstanding 2008 archive recordings of Isotope in this period titled Golden Section. The archive release features over an hour of material from 3 different dates. Gary joined us to talk about the new archive, his time in the band, his reflections from that tour that brought them to the U.S., and his current performing life. This is an interview not to miss, and another special chat with a gentleman that has been a big part of our program’s playlists over the last 17 years. Thank you Gary, and a special thanks to Steve Feigenbaum…

  1. THIS INTERVIEW WAS ABSOLUTELY EXCELLENT, I AM SO PLEASED THAT GARY IS STILL KEEPING WELL AND CONTINUES TO PLAY, I WAS A GREAT FAN (STILL AM) AND HAVE FOND MEMORIES OF SEEING ISOTOPE LIVE AT THE HAMERSMITH ODEON LONDON WAY BACK IN THE 70′S. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN AROUND THE SAME TIME AS I HAD SEEN JOHN MCGLAUGHLIN WITH THE ORIGINAL LINE UP OF THE MAHAVISHNU ORCHESRA ATH FAMOUS RAINBOW THEATRE FINSBURY PARK. I RECENTLY INTRODUCED MY SON, WHO IS AN EXCELLENT GUITARIST, STILL AT COLLEGE STUDYING GUITAR, TO GARY AND JOHN’S MUSIC AND HE HAS BEEN TOLLY BLOWN AWAY BY WHAT THESE GUYS WERE DOING ALL THOSE YEARS AGO. GOD BLESS YOU GARY.

  2. I would like to echo Pete’s comments - Gary is a wonderful musician and deserves far more recognition for his achievements! I loved him from his early grooving days with etheincomparable Brian Auger, to the later more jazzy work with Trinity - what a great album Befour is - and on to Isotope etc. And I must say his solo album Dancer stands as one of the great guitar fusion records of all time! Thanks for the joy your music has brought me Gary!
